When to Replace Your Toothbrush?

What is the standard timeframe to replace your toothbrush?  Unfortunately, toothbrushes are not like shoes, cars, and the clothes you wear.  Sometimes it can be difficult to know when it is time to replace them.   The answer really depends on the individual that is using the toothbrush.  How often are you using your toothbrush?  The next time you look at your toothbrush you might be thinking it is time to replace it with this helpful article.

Is it time for a new toothbrush?

Usually, 3 to 4 months is the recommended time to replace your toothbrush.  In the case that you are sick, you should replace your toothbrush right away.  This is most definitely the case if you are a family that puts all your toothbrushes together.  Is your toothbrush bristles crushed or flat?  Then your toothbrush is not going to perform the way you need it to brush against your teeth.  Brushing harder than needed will shorten the lifespan of your toothbrush.  Children will usually need a toothbrush sooner than the 3 to 4 months since they tend to brush harder than adults.

Types of Toothbrushes on the market

When it comes to Toothbrushes there are two types to consider: electric or manual. Both options work well.  You can learn more about electric toothbrush benefits here.  The manual toothbrush is lightweight and more portable.  With the manual, they are less expensive and you can apply the pressure you want.

How to Maintain your Toothbrush

The American Dental Association recommends that you do the following with your toothbrushes no matter if it is electric or manual.

  • Toothbrushes should never be shared.  When you share a toothbrush it can result in an exchange of bodily fluids and microorganisms between people.
  • Rinse the toothbrush thoroughly after each use to remove any remaining toothpaste and debris.
  • Store toothbrushes in an upright position after use and allow them to air dry.  Storing a moist toothbrush in a closed container promotes microbial growth more so than leaving it exposed to the open air.
