Reasons for Tooth Extractions

Did you know that tooth extractions are one of the most feared based procedures offered by a dental professional?  Tooth extraction is actually a common dental procedure.  Tooth extraction is the removal of the tooth from its socket in the bone.  In this article, we will go over some of the reasons for tooth extractions.

Impaction

Tooth impactions happen when a tooth presses directly against another one.  When this occurs you might experience swelling, tenderness, bleeding gums, and redness.  In some cases, the tooth can cause an infection.

Tooth Decay

The build-up of Tatar and plaque causes tooth decay.  These little deposits break down the enamel because of this it makes the teeth weaker. If this is left unchecked it can spread to adjacent teeth. It is one of the most common reasons for tooth removal worldwide.  Tooth decay normally occurs in patients that usually don’t visit the local dentist for regular checkups

Periodontal or Gum Disease

Gum disease when left unchecked can be just as damaging as Tooth Decay. When advanced stages of gum disease cause the degeneration of the ligaments, gum tissue, and bone support for your teeth.  The supporting structures of the teeth deteriorate, as a result, the tooth starts to become loose.  In some cases, the tooth will fall out by itself or would need to be extracted.

Trauma

Accidents do happen to your teeth.  It doesn’t matter if it was from playing sports or from a car crash, accidents can wreck your teeth.  A tooth might have to be pulled right away if it has been severely damaged.  This is because of possible infection.  You might need a root canal if it is left alone and gets worse.

Overcrowding

Overcrowding and tooth impaction goes hand and hand sometimes.  With impaction from another tooth or teeth, it can cause perfectly aligned teeth to become crooked.  Removing the problem tooth or teeth can free up space for the teeth to spread out as needed.

What to expect for a tooth extraction procedure?

For basic tooth extraction, the dentist will extract the tooth with forceps and give you a local anesthetic.  A surgical extraction might be needed because an impacted tooth is involved.  This might require cutting open the gums to be to make the tooth extraction. After the procedure, it is recommended to limit yourself to a soft food diet.  It is important to follow the recommended instructions provided by your dentist.  Please understand that your dentist will do everything in their power to remedy the situation before deciding to remove your teeth.
