Trick-Or-Treating Tips from a Dentist

It is Halloween again.  Where the costumes and the sugary snacks come out.  We know as a parent we probably are not going to be able to prevent our kids from not eating candy of some sort during this event.  At Smiles of Round Lake have compiled a helpful list of Trick-Or-Treating Tips from a Dentist

Before Trick-Or-Treating

Make a Plan for after trick-or-treating is over.  Everyone has their favorite candies.  Go through your candies and pick out your favorite candies.  Look at finding an organization that you can donate the rest of your leftover candies.  Some of the organizations could be for troops overseas, like Operation Gratitude.

When Trick-Or-Treating

Trick-Or-Treating can be fun for parents and children.  Do you know a lot of the times we reach for a piece of candy out of the bag because we are thirsty?  Have your child or yourself carry a bottle of water with you and sip while trick-or-treating.  It is even more useful if the water contains fluoride.  Fluoride helps prevent cavities.

Handing Out Treats

Research has shown that chewing sugar-free gum can help stimulate saliva production which can aid in the fight against cavities.  Look for one that has the ADA Seal of Acceptance.

This is where Trick-Or-Treating Tips from a Dentist can come in handy. Think about handing out a non-candy item.  Something like a bouncy ball, Spider Ring, yo-yos, monster finger puppets, vampires teeth, stamps, stickers, pencils (with Halloween designs), and a pirate eye patch to name a few suggestions.  Make sure that the gifts are age-appropriate.
In addition to handing out your trick-or-treat items, you can pair it with a brushing calendar.  You can download the brushing calendar from here.

General Teeth Maintenance

Brushing Twice a Day
Make sure that you are brushing your teeth twice a day.  It is even more important than ever to clean your teeth when eating candy and sugary items.  Remember to replace your toothbrush everything 4 months.  A worn-out toothbrush will not achieve the results you are looking for.

Floss Daily
Flossing daily cleans the particles and plaque in between your teeth.  This will help prevent the decaying bacteria from sitting on your gumlines.

Use Mouthwash
RInising your mouth out with mouthwash after brushing and flossing can assist with preventing cavities and gum disease.
